Overview

This program promotes human dignity, rehabilitation, and social reintegration for youth, school pupils, refugees, and individuals affected by the criminal justice system. It applies restorative justice principles that focus on accountability, reconciliation, learning, and healing.

This thematic area has the following projects:

1. Access to Justice and Legal Aid delivery

Implemented with support from Charles Stewart Mott Foundation through in collaboration with Legal Resources Foundation (LRF). Since 2011, RODI has been in the front-line line in legal aid delivery and promotion of human rights for indigent and vulnerable persons within the Kenya Criminal Justice System. The legal aid delivery involves conducting legal aid clinics and  and awareness to pre-trial detainees in remand centres and communities around them. 

 

2. School Based Crime Prevention and Life Skills

Implemented since 2005 with support from Tudor Trust UK and Bread for the World. The primary purpose of School-based Crime Prevention Project is to prepare pupils for a life free of crime and enhance their self-reliance after leaving school, in a manner that complements the current education curriculum, through application of practical skills and life skills training.

3. Pretrials detainees Justice and life skills

Implemented in 2011 to 2018 with support from Open Society Foundation (OSF).The project purpose was to fast track administration of justice and provide paralegal education to pre-trial detainees besides working with actors in the criminal justices system and various government departments as a measure of ensuring speedy and fair administration of justice.

4. Community and Schools Crime Prevention

Implemented in 2011 to 2016 with support from OSF. The project aimed at supporting community and school systems and structures in crime and violence prevention, while empowering community members and school pupils with life skills and income generating skills. The project contributed to a reduction in crime and violence incidence within schools and community, including improved reporting mechanisms .
