RODI Kenya joined farmers from Giathugu for a vibrant Seed Fair that celebrated the importance of indigenous seeds, farmer-managed seed systems, and agroecological farming practices.
The event provided a platform for farmers to showcase, exchange, and learn about a wide variety of locally adapted seeds that have been preserved and improved through generations. Participants shared knowledge on seed selection, preservation, storage, and multiplication, reinforcing the critical role that farmers play in conserving agricultural biodiversity.
Beyond seed exchange, the fair encouraged dialogue on climate-resilient farming practices, food sovereignty, and sustainable agriculture. Farmers also exchanged experiences on improving crop productivity while reducing dependence on external inputs through agroecological approaches.
The Seed Fair highlighted the value of community-led seed systems in strengthening food security and building resilience against the impacts of climate change. By promoting indigenous seed varieties, farmers are better equipped to produce nutritious food, preserve biodiversity, and safeguard their agricultural heritage for future generations.
