From Nyeri Hill to New Hope: How Youth-Led Tree Restoration Is Changing Lives

Blog / From Nyeri Hill to New Hope: How Youth-Led Tree Restoration Is Changing Lives

Environmental restoration is often discussed in policies, conferences, and global commitments. But on the slopes of Nyeri Hill, restoration is happening in a much more grounded and powerful way through the hands of local youth, supported by community-driven organizations like RODI Kenya.

One such story is that of Berricks Ayando, a Form Four student in 2025 from the Nyeri Hill area, whose journey captures the true meaning of sustainable conservation, youth empowerment, and community resilience.

Growing Trees, Growing Futures

Berricks is a day school student who, despite limited resources, chose to turn environmental responsibility into an opportunity for both ecosystem restoration and personal development. While many young people struggle to see a connection between education, livelihood, and environmental conservation, Berricks found that connection early.

In 2024, while still in school, he established a tree nursery within his compound. Through discipline, consistency, and self-learning, he successfully raised 9,000 tree seedlings. These seedlings were sold to RODI Kenya, an organization actively involved in Nyeri Hill forest restoration and other landscape rehabilitation initiatives.

RODI Kenya’s approach is deliberate: rather than sourcing seedlings externally, the organization purchases tree seedlings from local farmers and youth, ensuring that restoration efforts also strengthen local livelihoods. This model transforms tree planting from a one-time activity into a community-based green economy.

Restoration That Pays for Education

The impact of this partnership was immediate and deeply personal. The income Berricks earned from selling the seedlings enabled him to:

This is restoration with dignity where conservation does not compete with survival, but actively supports it.

Scaling Impact: From 9,000 to 15,000 Trees

Encouraged by the success of his first nursery, Berricks has since expanded his efforts. As of 2025, he is nurturing over 15,000 tree seedlings, with the goal of selling them in early 2026 to RODI Kenya and other like-minded organizations.

His ambition goes beyond income generation. The proceeds from this next cycle are intended to help him join college and further his education, proving that environmental stewardship can be a legitimate pathway to long-term opportunity.

Beyond nursery management, Berricks has also gained practical experience in tree seed harvesting, a critical skill for ensuring the availability of indigenous and climate-resilient species needed for sustainable forest restoration.

Nyeri Hill Restoration: A Community-Centered Model

Nyeri Hill is an ecologically important landscape facing pressures from deforestation, land degradation, and climate change. RODI Kenya’s restoration work in the area goes beyond planting trees it focuses on:

The story of Berricks Ayando demonstrates why this approach matters. When restoration includes local people as producers, partners, and beneficiaries, it becomes sustainable, scalable, and deeply rooted in community ownership.

A Call to Rethink Conservation

Berricks’ journey challenges a critical question:
What if environmental restoration was designed to educate, employ, and empower at the same time?

At RODI Kenya, the answer is already taking shape. By intentionally sourcing seedlings from youth like Berricks, the organization is proving that climate action can also be social action.

Conclusion: Planting Trees, Securing Tomorrow

As Nyeri Hill continues its journey toward ecological recovery, stories like this remind us that the future of conservation lies not only in forests but in the young people who care for them.

Berricks Ayando is not just growing trees.
He is growing hope, skills, income, and a future rooted firmly in the soil of Nyeri Hill.
