For many rural families, every day once began with a long and exhausting journey to fetch water. Women and children would walk several kilometers carrying heavy containers from rivers and streams sources that were often unsafe for human consumption. The burden consumed valuable hours that could have been spent in school, earning an income, or caring for their families.
Through its commitment to building resilient communities, RODI Kenya introduced an affordable and sustainable solution: 1,200-litre ferrocement water tanks.
Unlike conventional plastic tanks, ferrocement tanks are constructed using locally available materials, making them significantly more affordable while remaining durable and easy to maintain. More importantly, they are built by trained local artisans, ensuring that the investment benefits not only households but also the local economy.
Today, these water tanks are changing lives in ways that extend far beyond water storage.
Health Begins with Clean Water
The availability of clean water at home has dramatically improved hygiene and sanitation within the community.
Families now have sufficient water for bathing, washing clothes, cleaning their homes, and maintaining proper sanitation practices. Diseases that were once linked to contaminated stream water are becoming less common as households gain reliable access to safer water.
Children are growing up in healthier environments, and parents no longer live with the constant worry of illnesses caused by unsafe water sources.
Restoring Time, Energy, and Dignity
Before receiving the tanks, collecting water was physically demanding, especially for women.
Every trip meant carrying heavy containers over long distances, often resulting in chronic back pain and exhaustion.
For Liz (name changed to protect her identity), the impact has been life-changing.
"Life has become much easier," she says. "I no longer have to walk long distances carrying heavy water containers. My back no longer hurts because I simply fetch water from the tank outside my home."
The transformation has extended to her children as well.
Instead of spending hours fetching water after school, they now have time to complete their homework, rest, and focus on their education.
"My children are doing much better in school because they can concentrate on learning instead of worrying about collecting water," Liz explains. "They now have time to study peacefully."
For her family, the water tank has brought convenience, improved health, and renewed hope for the future.
Strengthening Food Security
Water availability has also transformed farming practices.
Previously, many households depended entirely on rainfall to sustain their kitchen gardens and crops. During dry periods, vegetables withered, reducing both household nutrition and income.
With stored water readily available, families can now irrigate their gardens more consistently, helping vegetables and other crops survive dry spells. This has strengthened household food security while reducing the risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns.
The water tanks have become an important tool in building climate resilience within the community.
Creating Jobs Through Local Skills
The project's impact extends beyond the households receiving water tanks.
Recognizing the importance of sustainable livelihoods, RODI Kenya trained local masons in the construction of ferrocement water tanks, equipping them with practical skills that continue generating income long after the project's completion.
One of these artisans is Richard, who had previously specialized only in house construction.
Today, his expanded expertise has opened new opportunities.
"Learning how to build ferrocement water tanks has changed my career," Richard says. "When I meet new clients, I can now offer more services than before. I have become more competitive because I have additional skills."
The increased demand for his work has translated into improved financial stability.
"I am earning more than I used to. I can comfortably provide for my family, educate my children, and plan for the future."
The additional income has already enabled Richard to invest in livestock, purchasing goats and a dairy cow that provide an extra source of income for his household.
His story demonstrates how a single technical skill can create lasting economic opportunities and strengthen community resilience.
A Ripple Effect of Lasting Change
The ferrocement water tank initiative is proving that development is most effective when it addresses multiple challenges at once.
A simple water tank has improved health, reduced the burden on women and children, strengthened education, increased agricultural productivity, created employment, and empowered local artisans with marketable skills.
By combining innovative, low-cost technology with community capacity building, RODI Kenya is not simply constructing water tanks it is helping families build healthier homes, stronger livelihoods, and brighter futures.
