Introduction
RODI is a Kenyan NGO concerned about the high levels of poverty and the vicious cycle of poverty, crime, imprisonment, hardening of petty offenders, rejection of ex-prisoners, re-offending and perpetuation of poverty. Promotion of expensive and environmental unfriendly conventional agriculture is the single most important cause of poverty among Kenyans. Hence our interest in promoting sustainable agriculture on one hand, and reducing re-offending on the other.
This report is an account of progress made in the implementation of RODIs Prisoner Rehabilitation Programme during the period February to July 2006, with financial support from Tudor Trust and GTS. The report covers activities carried out under prisoner rehabilitation both inside and outside prison, those under the Schools Organic Agriculture Project (SOAP) and Table Banking. HIV/AIDS project, which is part and parcel of PREP, but funded by Action Aid International Kenya is reported on elsewhere. The planned activities for the six months period are reported on in tabular form.
Other supplementary activities carried out during the period are given prominence as they played a big role in enabling RODI not only pursue the set objectives but also its mission.
PREP activities were mainly agricultural: land use and food production using sustainable agricultural practices, food processing for value addition and soil and water conservation. Under SOAP a lot of mileage was covered in terms of intensifying activities in 22 schools; however the target of reaching 30 schools had to be shelved for reasons explained below.
