Detailed Account of
Prisoners
Rehabilitation Program (PREP) activities for the
period between August 2004 and July 2005. During this period, a total of 2020 prisoners
were trained. 309 Follow-ups to ex-prisoners made, and 11 CLIGS formed (see annexes
1 and 2 below). These outcomes are detailed among the key events of 2004/2005.
The Schools Organic Agriculture Project (SOAP) was given more focus and 8 schools
brought on board. A total of 186 school pupils benefited from the project.
Rehabilitation of prisoners and promotion of sustainable agriculture for
poverty reduction gained momentum after the successful restorative justice
workshop of April 2004 where it was recommended as a good rehabilitation
practice which could even be extended to other countries in the region.
As a result, we have witnessed improved
collaboration with Kenya Prisons Service, formation of alliances among workshop
participants from within and outside the region and
general increase in profile of RODIs Prisoner Rehabilitation Programme.
During the period in review RODI diversified
strategies and sharpened focus on improving production and livelihoods among
poor Kenyans through its two main development interventions of sustainable
agriculture and prisoner rehabilitation. The strategies, which are explained in
detail in the this report were based on educating prisoners and poor farmers on
the advantages of sustainable agriculture over conventional agriculture,
increasing soil fertility, introduction of sustainable agriculture through
schools, growing of high value crops, processing and marketing and policy
advocacy.
